Ushers/Greeters at St. Matthias
This ministry position is a very valuable and important ministry. Ushers are the
first person that parishioners see when entering the church. Ushers are there to
greet people when they arrive, to assist during the Mass with the collections and
offertory, ushering for communion, assistance with parishioners and also passing
out the bulletins as parishioners are leaving the Masses.
This ministry is a necessity to help assist the Priest and keep everything running
smoothly during Mass.
We invite anyone interested in becoming an usher, either permanent or as a
substitute, to feel free to contact us (586) 997-3692. We welcome anyone from
high school age on up, male and female - it is a great way to be involved with the
parish, serve our Lord, meet new people, etc.
Let us introduce ourselves. Our names are Tony and Veronica Giganti, we have
belonged to St. Matthias since 2001 when we moved to Sterling Heights. We
were honored when Fr. Bill Bonnici approached us and asked if we would become
ushers in 2002. When the head usher Gerry Demunyck decided it was time for
him to retire after 40 plus years, he asked Tony to take over his position as head
usher for the 8:30 Mass. Once again there was some honor with that as well.
During this past year, there was a need for new ushers and once again there was
honor when we were asked to head all three Masses for the ushers and to assist
with having all three Masses follow the same procedures to make them all
uniform. We promoted this ministry and went from 12 ushers to 23 within three
weeks. We provided some training and are proud to say that we have heard a lot
of comments on what a great job they are doing. This would not be possible
without the help of the ushers that were already in place giving their support and
assistance. We are very proud of all the ushers at each Mass and would like to
express our thanks to each of them for giving their time to serve on this ministry.
We have had some great times and have met a lot of parishioners that have
become our friends and part of our family of parishioners.
Let us serve the Lord together.
